• The Pollen Waits on Tiptoe

Author: Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre Translator: Madhav Ajjampur

The book presents English translations of 26 selected poems of 20th-century Kannada literature’s varakavi (heaven-touched poet) and one of the greatest lyric poets to have lived: Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre.

Although no selection of Bendre’s poems, even in the original Kannada, can ever be representative of the astonishing range of his poetry, the poems in this book give the reader a sampling of some of the different types of poems Bendre wrote – including the blank verse of his sonnets, the free verse of some of his later poetry, and the overwhelmingly-euphonic lyric poems of his first period. Several of the included poems are also acknowledged classics.

A standout feature of this book is its character as a multimedia presentation. Given the exceptional aural quality of Bendre’s poetry, a provision has been made for the reader to listen to audio recordings of each poem, in both its original and translated forms. Also included are Afterwords which, among other things, contain stories about Bendre, interesting anecdotes related to the poems, and reflections on the process of translation.

It is the translator’s fond hope that the publication of this book will help Bendre’s sublime poetry gain the global recognition it deserves.

  • The Wisdom Behind Surgical Aphorisms
    What the masters tell us

This book aims to accomplish the following goals:

    – To provide timely advice to surgeons both young and old in times of clinical dilemma

    – To reiterate the well-established principles of clinical surgery like meticulous history taking, diligent examination, and keen observation

    – To reassure budding surgeons that apprehension and self-doubt are not new and can be overcome by perseverance

    – To warn the younger generation that the basic principles like a thorough knowledge of anatomy have not become obsolete with the advent of technology

    – Above all, to emphasize that surgery is as much an art as it is science and is a vocation that is fulfilling in the truest sense

Hands-on training in clinical skills is being increasingly neglected. The advent of competitive MCQ-based exams to gain entry into postgraduate training has made young medical graduates more intent on collecting facts than skills. Hence, young surgeons of today are ill-prepared to face the real world filled with uncertainties. This book is written primarily to guide these young and unsure surgeons, through the fatherly advice contained in the aphorisms. Of course, the wisdom behind the aphorisms is timeless and could be inculcated by the young and the old alike.

  • Reimagining Border in
    Cross-border Education

Universities are inherently and definitionally universal in their quest for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. They are set to defy borders that exist in parochial forms. Globalization which opened up borders has by design or default created inequalities and imbalances in knowledge systems. Undoubtedly, knowledge is power but the difference in the power that is intrinsic to it and the power that is ascribed which is determined by dominant political and economic hierarchies.

If knowledge predominantly flows from global north to global south, people seeking knowledge move from global south to global north. These imbalances are also seen within these regions, between cultures and communities, one claiming superiority over the other. These realities call for a reassessment of not only what constitutes knowledge, but also what encompasses the idea of borders. Through this book, we wish to see more elaboration on the inclusive role of education that can act as an equalizer or as a catalyst for creating a level playing field across borders.

  • Comets – Nomads of the Solar System

This book introduces the general reader to the world of comets – those celestial visitors from the outer Solar System that occasionally visit the Earth’s neighbourhood and put up spectacular shows in the night sky. The world had geared up for just such a show at the end of 2013, when Comet ISON was expected to light up the night sky. Using the occasion to bring the world of comets to those interested, this book is a delightful read about the quirky world of these unpredictable visitors. Apart from lucidly and accurately updating the reader about what comets are, where they come from, why is it that they assume the fantastic shapes they do etc. “Comets” also regales the reader with myths about comets in various cultural contexts, snippets about famous comets in the history of mankind, anecdotes on comet discoveries and discoverers, the bewildering procedures followed while naming comets and much more. The book takes a hard look at the hype surrounding the fiery expectations about Comet ISON an cautions the reader that, while there was a good chance of the comet blazing forth in the skies of December 2013, there was a realistic chance that the comet would not survive its close encounter with the Sun. Sadly, the pessimistic predictions came true and the comet disintegrated as it went around the Sun. As we wait for chance to throw us a Great Comet to gaze at in the future, “Comets: Nomads of the Solar System” is an excellent guide to prepare for the event!

  • Childhood Cancer

Childhood Cancer is a major medical problem in most of the societies of the modern world. Though enough literature is available on the subject, it is not easily intelligible to common people. The book is an attempt to create this awareness among parents through proper information about the disease. Further, the book would also serve as a manual for MBBS students and professionals in other fields for primary treatment and management of the childhood cancer patients.
