• State Matters- Kannada Sub-Nationalism and State Formation

    Author: Rajendra Chenni

State Matters: Kannada Subnationalism and State Formation analyzes the formation of a linguistic state and the inevitability of the contradictions arising from material and historical conditions. It examines the historical and political context which led to the emergence and acceptance of linguistic or regional identities during the freedom struggle, a struggle which ironically tried to subsume these identities into one master discourse of the nation.

This book, traversing disciplinary boundaries, weaves complex disparate elements into the concept of linguistic subnationality. It underlines how linguistic subnationality is sustained against the push and pull of caste/class hegemony, national party-based politics, and larger forces of development and globalization.

  • Sringara in Subandhu and Nemichandra

Author: Mahaling Bhat, Editor: N Thirumaleshwara Bhat

The Vāsavadattā by Subandhu and the Līlāvati Prabandham by Nēmicandra are two renowned Campū Kāvyas (epic poem) in Kannada, which can be traced back to the early half of 700 BCE. K Mahalinga Bhat published a comprehensive analysis of the epic poems in 1966, situating the original works in their cultural and historical contexts. This book highlights the folk-tale motifs, the characterization and delineation of various Rasas, and analyzes the language of the epics. It also includes excerpts in Sanskrit from both works, accompanied by prose translations.

The original stories are characterized by the element of Śṙṅgāra (Romance). In this book, the aspect of romance in the narratives and the lives of the protagonists is seen through a contemporary lens. It highlights societal conditions and norms prevalent between 700 to 600 BCE in Vāsavadattā and Līlāvati Prabandham in a different light. This new edition compiled by N Thirumaleshwara Bhat draws attention to the relevance of epic poems today and the universality of their narrative.

  • History of Private Banking in South Canara District (1906-69)

    Author: Amol Agrawal

This book explores the unique history of banking in India’s South Canara district. The origin and growth of banking in this region played a significant role in the history of Indian banking, but its contributions remain under-researched. The banks of South Canara are particularly noteworthy as they implemented financially inclusive practices long before they were made mandatory during the nationalization of banks in 1969.

The other sixteen nationalized banks were predominantly from the four metropolitan cities Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras. The banks of South Canara warrant special attention as the prevalence of this establishment came about in a comparatively remote district. The banks also introduced and continued to offer many schemes for the benefit of the people in the region. This book traces the evolution of banks from the South Canara and how they have contributed to the rich local administrative history of the region.

  • In Solidarity: The Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Novels

    Author: Pradipta Shyam Chowdhury

The Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Novels explores the concept of “solidarity”, through an in-depth reading of the “Parsi-Pakistani-Punjabi” writer’s works. As a writer, Bapsi Sidhwa resists a defined category, which gives her the fluid perspective of an “insider-outsider”. In context of Third World feminism, Pradeepta Shyam Choudhary delineates the writer’s significant position in the discourse, drawing a parallel between her voice and the characters in her stories.

Drawing on the motif of the feminist quest for self-establishment in her writings, this book analyzes the issues raised about lived experiences of women in the Third World in general, and South Asia in particular. It illustrates Bapsi Sidhwa as a reminiscent thinker, highlighting her acute awareness of social conditions.

Bringing to the forefront the diasporic elements of her creative career, this book focuses mainly on four of Bapsi Sidhwa’s novels – WaterThe Pakistani BrideIce-Candy-Man, and An American Brat.

  • The Wisdom Behind Surgical Aphorisms
    What the masters tell us

This book aims to accomplish the following goals:

    – To provide timely advice to surgeons both young and old in times of clinical dilemma

    – To reiterate the well-established principles of clinical surgery like meticulous history taking, diligent examination, and keen observation

    – To reassure budding surgeons that apprehension and self-doubt are not new and can be overcome by perseverance

    – To warn the younger generation that the basic principles like a thorough knowledge of anatomy have not become obsolete with the advent of technology

    – Above all, to emphasize that surgery is as much an art as it is science and is a vocation that is fulfilling in the truest sense

Hands-on training in clinical skills is being increasingly neglected. The advent of competitive MCQ-based exams to gain entry into postgraduate training has made young medical graduates more intent on collecting facts than skills. Hence, young surgeons of today are ill-prepared to face the real world filled with uncertainties. This book is written primarily to guide these young and unsure surgeons, through the fatherly advice contained in the aphorisms. Of course, the wisdom behind the aphorisms is timeless and could be inculcated by the young and the old alike.

  • Reimagining Border in
    Cross-border Education

Universities are inherently and definitionally universal in their quest for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. They are set to defy borders that exist in parochial forms. Globalization which opened up borders has by design or default created inequalities and imbalances in knowledge systems. Undoubtedly, knowledge is power but the difference in the power that is intrinsic to it and the power that is ascribed which is determined by dominant political and economic hierarchies.

If knowledge predominantly flows from global north to global south, people seeking knowledge move from global south to global north. These imbalances are also seen within these regions, between cultures and communities, one claiming superiority over the other. These realities call for a reassessment of not only what constitutes knowledge, but also what encompasses the idea of borders. Through this book, we wish to see more elaboration on the inclusive role of education that can act as an equalizer or as a catalyst for creating a level playing field across borders.
