  • Boatman! – Take these songs from me

    Authors:

Boatman! take these songs from me is a compilation of mesmerizing artwork coupled with tankas. A tanka is an ancient Japanese form of poetry written in short five-line verses, with a total of 31 syllables. The painted reliefs are an aesthetic creation by Masood Hussain, who bases his artwork in this book on Mirza Ghalib’s couplets on the inevitability of grief. These works explore human suffering, the melancholy of life, and the visceral struggle against oppression..
These themes are contextualized in the poems, written by Gabriel Rosenstock, which speak of love, sacrifice, longing, and freedom. His poems also comprise an interesting orthographical inversion of the capital Y in ‘You’ and the lower case ‘i’, which subjectifies the reading experience through an outward focal lens, reflected in the play of light and hue in the paintings. The bilingual poems in Irish and English capture the essence of the paintings, ferrying the collection across to the reader. This poetically painted coffee table book is a ‘Boatman’ unto itself.

  • History of Private Banking in South Canara District (1906-69)

    Author: Amol Agrawal

This book explores the unique history of banking in India’s South Canara district. The origin and growth of banking in this region played a significant role in the history of Indian banking, but its contributions remain under-researched. The banks of South Canara are particularly noteworthy as they implemented financially inclusive practices long before they were made mandatory during the nationalization of banks in 1969.

The other sixteen nationalized banks were predominantly from the four metropolitan cities Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras. The banks of South Canara warrant special attention as the prevalence of this establishment came about in a comparatively remote district. The banks also introduced and continued to offer many schemes for the benefit of the people in the region. This book traces the evolution of banks from the South Canara and how they have contributed to the rich local administrative history of the region.

  • The Pollen Waits on Tiptoe- Selected Poems

Author: Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre  Translator: Madhav Ajjampur

The book presents English translations of 26 selected poems of 20th-century Kannada literature’s varakavi (heaven-touched poet) and one of the greatest lyric poets to have lived: Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre.

Although no selection of Bendre’s poems, even in the original Kannada, can ever be representative of the astonishing range of his poetry, the poems in this book give the reader a sampling of some of the different types of poems Bendre wrote – including the blank verse of his sonnets, the free verse of some of his later poetry, and the overwhelmingly-euphonic lyric poems of his first period. Several of the included poems are also acknowledged classics.

A standout feature of this book is its character as a multimedia presentation. Given the exceptional aural quality of Bendre’s poetry, a provision has been made for the reader to listen to audio recordings of each poem, in both its original and translated forms. Also included are Afterwords which, among other things, contain stories about Bendre, interesting anecdotes related to the poems, and reflections on the process of translation.

  • Childhood Cancer

    Authors:

Childhood Cancer is a major medical problem in most of the societies of the modern world. Though enough literature is available on the subject, it is not easily intelligible to common people. An ordinary parent whose ward is affected by any form of childhood cancer would beat a loss without the basic information. This book is aimed at educating a non-professional who wishes to grasp the problem in detail and in a simple way. The book primarily deals with the signs and symptoms of cancer in children which enable early detection. It is written in a lucid manner to remove the myth among parents that diagnosis of cancer in children amounts to a death sentence. Many of the childhood cancers, if detected early, can be cured completely, and the patients can live the rest of their lives like any other normal people. The book is an attempt to create this awareness among parents through proper information about the disease. Further, the book would also serve as a manual for MBBS students and professionals in other fields for primary treatment and management of the childhood cancer patients.

  • A Modern Introduction to Madhva Philosophy

The author has made this treatise on Madhva’s realistic school of Vedānta philosophy convincing to the modern mind by employing western logical apparatus in substantiating Madhva’s ideas. Following the Indian classical tradition, the author has examined the validity of Advaitavedānta, the Absolute Monism of Śaṅkara and Bhāskara as Pūrvapakṣa, and logically proved its inconsistencies. He has then established the Dvaitasiddhānta i.e., the Monotheistic Dualism of Madhva. He has successfully brought out the nuances of the realistic school of Indian philosophical thought in this work. A Modern Introduction to Mādhva Philosophy is Prof B H Kotabagi’s posthumous publication.

  • Mahāmmāyi

Author: Chandrasekhara Kambara, Translator: Kathyayini Kunjibettu

Mahāmmāyi is the story of the legend of Shatavithaayi – the Goddess of death, and her adopted son Sambhashiva. Out of affection for her son, Goddess Shatavithaayi blesses him with the “power of life”. The blessing was that death will evade the people who are treated by Sambashiva. But a certain condition set by Shatavithaayi forbade him from healing every ill man. The condition was that, if Shatavithaayi stood on the right side of the patient, Sambhashiva could treat that person and he would live; but, if she stood on the left side of the patient, he should not treat that person as his death was inevitable. Through a distinct method of story-telling, the story follows the life of Sambhashiva as he begins to question the ideas of fate and destiny. Thus, the conflict between fate and human efforts to change that fate is vividly described in this play.

  • The Semi-Detached European

    Author: Michael Hindley

The European Union has emerged as a world economic power from the ashes of the Second World War. Starting with the post-war settlement, the book takes a broad and informed view of Britain’s changing relationship with this dynamic development. The successful attempt to revive democracy and establish economic recovery in Western Europe was fuelled by Franco-German reconciliation but Britain remained benevolently aloof. Britain’s own recovery was not as successful as that of the emerging “Common Market”, and so Britain’s political elite looked to Europe to replace the markets it was losing worldwide only to be spurned by her long-time rival France. Thereon, Britain played an influential role, especially in the development of the “internal market”. However, Britain never quite lost the tag of being semi-detached – wanting to take the benefits but always wary of surrendering national sovereignty for the alleged greater good. This book reviews the vital role played by major actors in Europe’s integration, including the decisive duel between Margaret Thatcher and Jacques Delors about the nature of the Europe. It provides an assessment of the epoch-making events of the fall of Berlin Wall which opened the possibility of a reunited Europe.

In this book, the author also describes his own “Europeanization” as a student, and then as an active politician who engaged in Europe’s transformation first-hand.

    Author: Translator:

Konkani Roman Catholic Christians were converted from other groups by Goan Missionaries long back, keeping the caste system tradition to a large extent in layers such as the Bamonn, the Charodi, the Gawdi, the Nendar, the Shudra, etc. At the time of marriages and other social gatherings they continue to consider caste system norms and customs in the community. Caste system in Indian Christians is vividly described in the novel Bamonn. Christopher Pai of Kalyanpura hails from a Bamonn family and takes great pride in his ancestry. He believes in the stories about his Konkani Roman Catholic ancestors from his elders and about their being true Christians, holding on to their faith despite tremendous pressure to convert to Islam during Tipu Sultan’s regime. He also believes Bamonns are superior to other Christians in the community. After retiring from his job of a Headmaster, he refuels his obsession to retrace his roots and find out the truth about his ancestors. In his journey of self-assurance and faith, will he succeed in his mission to convince his family, his children and the community at large of his glorious ancestry and in still pride in the next generation? . . .

  • Just a few pages: Some Memories of Saraswatibai Rajwade

    Author: Vaidehi, Translator: Deepa Ganesh

This book is a coming together of two women writers of modern Kannada literature; one from its early period, the other, a contemporary. Saraswati Bai Rajwade, the early writer, became a fable, a mythology, leaving behind only the shadows of her writing. Vaidehi, the contemporary writer, reinvents Rajwade from the folds of history and gives her a life in the present. Saraswati Bai Rajwade was born into a poor family in the Dakshina Kannada of yore. By chance, she stepped into theatre and later into films. But all the glory that came to her unexpectedly, vanished just as suddenly. She later became the wife of a rich and high official, travelled abroad and underwent immense suffering. In her pain and loneliness, she took to books and also began to write and attained glory as a writer. In the last years of her life, she returned to a life of austerity and anonymity. Vaidehi has collected bits and pieces from her life and writing, presenting before us a unique tapestry. In this tapestry, Vaidehi?s perceptions criss-cross with Rajwade?s life and writing. Art does not reside in the object, but in its close encounter with life. This work unfolds before us as a grand illustration of such twin narratives.

  • Dhvani and Epiphany: Essays in Criticism

    Author:

Dhvani and Epiphany examines the work of major Indian poets like Nissim Ezekiel and Arun Kolatkar; the struggle of young poets to find an audience; and the art of fiction. But its main focus is on the nature of creativity. How does an artist communicate his meaning? What makes a work genuinely creative? Through a sensitive exploration of poetry- ranging from the simple poems of a child, Poorna Prajna, to the complex “Byzantium Poems” of Yeats- the first seven essays try to show how a poem comes to life when it speaks to us and we listen to its dhvani and respond.

Even in fiction, it is not all realism. There is irony in exploring the paradoxical nature of reality; events taking on symbolic overtones; and epiphany, moments of illumination and insights – when surprising correspondences are seen. Writers cannot surprise and delight their audience if they themselves are not surprised and delighted by such insights.
