Capturing the Cosmic Light – A Handbook of Astrophotography
Author: Sathyakumar P M Sharma
The Handbook of Astrophotography is the first book dedicated to Astronomical Imaging through modest equipment, and the first to be published in India. It is a chronicle of the techniques learnt and employed by the author and is by no means proprietary. It is assumed that the reader is equipped with the basic knowledge to use a digital camera. After showing the many methods to capture the Cosmos, the book shows how to process these images. It is designed to be a handbook and not a user manual. The author hopes that the reader will be confident in astronomical imaging and develop his/her own techniques after reading the book. Sathyakumar started Astrophotography in January 2006 with a homemade wooden star-tracking mount and a camera borrowed from a friend. He later used his homemade Newtonian reflector telescope and an inexpensive digital camera to capture photos of the Moon. With an MSc in Aerospace engineering from the University of Salford, Manchester, he joined Opticstar Ltd, as a design engineer. There he was trained on the latest of astronomical instruments available for the amateur astrophotographer and eventually purchased the Celestron C8 Schmidt cassegrain telescope and the CG-5 Equatorial mount. Currently, he uses a GSO 6 inch RC telescope and an HEQ5-PRO computerized mount as well as an Orion 80ED Apochromatic telescope for astrophotography. He also owns an Astrotrac to take wide field vistas of the Cosmos. He is now employed as a Scientific Officer at Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Karnataka.

In Solidarity: The Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Novels
Author: Pradipta Shyam Chowdhury
The Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Novels explores the concept of “solidarity”, through an in-depth reading of the “Parsi-Pakistani-Punjabi” writer’s works. As a writer, Bapsi Sidhwa resists a defined category, which gives her the fluid perspective of an “insider-outsider”. In context of Third World feminism, Pradeepta Shyam Choudhary delineates the writer’s significant position in the discourse, drawing a parallel between her voice and the characters in her stories.
Drawing on the motif of the feminist quest for self-establishment in her writings, this book analyzes the issues raised about lived experiences of women in the Third World in general, and South Asia in particular. It illustrates Bapsi Sidhwa as a reminiscent thinker, highlighting her acute awareness of social conditions.
Bringing to the forefront the diasporic elements of her creative career, this book focuses mainly on four of Bapsi Sidhwa’s novels – Water, The Pakistani Bride, Ice-Candy-Man, and An American Brat.

The Princely States and the Making of Modern India
Editors: D A Prasanna, K Sadashiva
India’s Princely States have enjoyed only a minor place in the narrative of modern nationhood. Certain Princely States used the dynamics of transfer of power to carve autonomy from the colonial British to advance their societies. Some of the Princely States modernized their education, public health and industrial sectors way ahead of the British administered territories. Prof Washbrook provides a macro picture of the dynamics in the Princely States of South India and sees a distinctive and indigenous form of modernity. Hierarchy, religion, heredity and caste were not obliterated for rationalism and secularism. As socialism and pseudo-secularism are fading away, the significance of the indigenous forms of modernity of the Princely States becomes more relevant to understand India in the 21st century. Ten historian thought leaders provide an interesting perspective to make it a compelling read. K Sadashiva is the architect of this book. As he developed the theme and brought together historians from various parts of the world, an interesting tapestry was woven. He is a historian actively researching the Indian Union, the Princely States and the rise of political power of caste and class in independent India. D A Prasanna has an interest in history, visual art, public health and education. He has supported new initiatives in these fields and has actively nurtured ideas to result in outcomes.

Reimagining Border in Cross-border Education
Editors: Neeta Inamdar, Pranjali Kirloskar
Universities are inherently and definitionally universal in their quest for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. They are set to defy borders that exist in parochial forms. Globalization which opened up borders has by design or default created inequalities and imbalances in knowledge systems. Undoubtedly, knowledge is power but the difference in the power that is intrinsic to it and the power that is ascribed which is determined by dominant political and economic hierarchies.

If knowledge predominantly flows from global north to global south, people seeking knowledge move from global south to global north. These imbalances are also seen within these regions, between cultures and communities, one claiming superiority over the other. These realities call for a reassessment of not only what constitutes knowledge, but also what encompasses the idea of borders. Through this book, we wish to see more elaboration on the inclusive role of education that can act as an equalizer or as a catalyst for creating a level playing field across borders.

History of Private Banking in South Canara District (1906-69)
Author: Amol Agrawal
This book explores the unique history of banking in India’s South Canara district. The origin and growth of banking in this region played a significant role in the history of Indian banking, but its contributions remain under-researched. The banks of South Canara are particularly noteworthy as they implemented financially inclusive practices long before they were made mandatory during the nationalization of banks in 1969.
The other sixteen nationalized banks were predominantly from the four metropolitan cities Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras. The banks of South Canara warrant special attention as the prevalence of this establishment came about in a comparatively remote district. The banks also introduced and continued to offer many schemes for the benefit of the people in the region. This book traces the evolution of banks from the South Canara and how they have contributed to the rich local administrative history of the region.

English Drama on the Bombay Stage in the Late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century
Author: Kumudini Arvind Mehta Editor: Sharmishta Saha
Theatre in Mumbai or colonial Bombay emerged at a time when the city was still finding its own contours and taking shape. “Theatre” in the sense of the art form and the word that we know today, which has been comfortably incorporated in almost all Indian languages also took shape during this early period. Kumudini Arvind Mehta’s doctoral dissertation, submitted to the University of Bombay, now known as University of Mumbai is being published in the form of this book. It navigates the journey of “theatre” starting with the early “amateur theatre” at Bombay Green in the late eighteenth century. Today we know this area as the Horniman Circle in Mumbai. She traces the origins of professional theatre in colonial Bombay to the amateur exercises of the English inhabitants, the Parsi businessmen and the English educated local inhabitants of the city. She painstakingly goes through newspaper articles and announcements, old journals, property papers, old maps etc., to weave the narrative of “theatre” that shapes the legacy of the art form that was either inherited or rejected by later artists. Mehta’s work is significant not only for the study of “theatre” but also to understand colonial sociability and the role of the English language in this regard. Sharmistha Saha, the editor of the book has given it its present shape. She has primarily updated citations, incorporated information on current research as also images of the erstwhile theatre districts wherever applicable.

Journalism and Journalism Education in Developing Countries
Editors: Beate Illg, Beatrice Dernbach
Free and fair media are at the heart of any democratic set up. A thriving field of journalism and zealous and ethical journalists in that sense become torch bearers of a brighter and promising tomorrow. In this light, the status of journalists, the most important actors in the field becomes increasingly important as a matter of study. They act as gatekeepers of information that is flooding in the era of new media, a wave that is not so new anymore. Their roles remain intact and even becomes prominent in the chaos of many-to-many communication.
Not concentrating on specific countries, selected contributions in the book reflect on the developments of media and journalism education across different countries. Introducing the book with an overview about the state-of-the-art of journalism education and the research on a meta level, the book moves on to talk about media studies in the Asian countries and in Arab world, the African States and Brazil.
The recent economic and social developments present both opportunities and risks for journalism. Freedom of expression and freedom of press, even in democratic countries, are under pressure. This book provides an international perspective on the different aspects of journalism – the situation in which journalists work, their working conditions, educational backgrounds, struggles and successes. It is aimed at an international public interested in the field of journalism and freedom of speech. It addresses journalists, trainers and academics. Furthermore, institutions in the field of development cooperation, education or cultural policy and cultural education are the focus of this work. Though the book is focused on journalism and journalism education in developing countries, contributions are from across the globe. This book is an interesting read for all those who care about a vital media landscape and an open democratic society.Interested readers may write to us at mup@manipal.edu about purchasing the book.
