  • Early Buddhist Artisans and their Architectural Vocabulary

    Author:

The early Buddhist architectural vocabulary, being the first of its kind, maintained its monopoly for about half a millennium, beginning from the third century BCE. To begin with, it was oral, not written. The Jain, Hindu, and other Indian sectarian builders later developed their vocabulary on this foundation, though not identically. An attempt is made here to understand this vocabulary and the artisans who first made use of it.

In the epigraphic ledger, the first reference to the mythical creator of the universe, the Visvakarma (Visakama), is made on the thupas at Sanchi and Kanaganahalli; the earliest excavators of cave temples, comprising five specialists – selavdhaki, nayikamisa, kadhicaka, mahakataka and mithaka –  as well as a team of master-architects and supervisors, called the navakamis, appear at Kanheri. Besides these, there were also others called avesanis, atevasinas, acaryas, and upajjhayas all over the Buddhist world. The list does not end with these, because there were yet others called vadhakis (carpenters), seli-vadhakis (stonecutters), sela-rupakas (stone sculptors), mithakas (polishers), and so on. All these artisans who have recorded their life stories on the stone surface are identified, and their professional contributions evaluated here for the first time.

  • Karakarthaprabodhini

    Author:

Kaumudī (water lily) is the primer to study Sanskrit grammar, yet an ardent reader might find it a maze to untangle from its complexities. There is a need of Kaumudī (moonlight) to blossom it and show the light to reach its core. Kārakārthaprabodhinī is such an attempt. Kāraka, a factor that determines the relation between verb and the constituent words of a sentence, enables the reader to understand the intent of the sentence and thus critical discourses too. The Sanskrit grammatical texts and discourses have elaborated on the subtleties of Kāraka. Due to its profundity, there was a need for a lucid writing for the scholars and students for easy comprehension, which can be a reference book. Dr Potti made this possible for the Malayalam readers. Dr Shivani presents it for the Sanskrit fraternity too, with an introduction by Dr Varakhedi.

  • Judicial System in the Social Tradition of Tulunadu

    Author: Suresh Rai K

The unique cultural heritage of Tulunadu is reflected in its historical approach to justice, deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs and social hierarchy. Though no longer dominant, this system continues to hold cultural value, offering insight into the region’s traditions and community dynamics. The coexistence of traditional and modern justice systems reveals how dispute-resolution mechanisms evolve, adapting to contemporary times while retaining cultural roots.

A significant reality to note here is that no novel system can completely replace previous ones. Even in moments of transformation, a new structure does not eradicate the old system; rather, it imbues its altered self with the older principles, either in novel forms or modified versions. Even in subtle ways, the shadows of yesteryear or the crumpled silhouettes of oppression linger on. Similarly, in present-day realities, traditional justice measures operate within the visible horizons of the modern judicial structure.

The concept of ‘justice’ in Tulunadu,  as elsewhere, has historically been shaped by political, social, religious, and cultural influences. These forces have played a significant role in defining what constitutes justice, often reflecting the dominant power structures and societal norms. The conceptual rubric of ‘justice’ is contextual in nature and not objective or absolute. Justice is inclined towards individual interests, raising central questions of ‘whose justice?’ and ‘justice to whom?’ ‘Whose justice?’ is answered by identifying whose side the witnesses stand on, while ‘justice to whom?’ is guided by the strongest party able to manoeuvre witnesses to their side. It is thus difficult for any judicial system to operate objectively. Objectivity is a novel dream or a majestic mirage, an aspirational ideal, as individual perspectives and biases inevitably influence our perception of reality.

  • Migration Matters: South Asian Diaspora, Literary Culture and the Politics of (Be)longing

    Author: Paromita Chakrabarti

The book explores the politics of gendered belonging in the South Asian (SA) diaspora through the lens of migration. It focuses on the lives of contemporary postcolonial SA migrants, particularly women, through a critical analysis of select South Asian diaspora literature. It brings together authors who have not previously been discussed collectively, examining their works to uncover the nuanced interplay between homeland, hostland, and diaspora. Focusing on postcolonial South Asian women, it critically analyzes works by Sorayya Khan, Meena Alexander, Sara Suleri, Anita Desai, and Kiran Desai to explore the interplay of homeland, hostland, and diaspora. Unpacking the grammar of dislocation, displacement, border crossing, and relocation, Migration Matters uses a postcolonial theoretical lens to assess the impact of colonialism and modernity on the production of diasporic subjectivities and the construction of diasporic communities. Engaging with the concept of a diaspora space that both separates and merges boundaries of inclusion and exclusion, this book delves into the triad of homeland, hostland, and diaspora, highlighting the processes of exchange, negotiation, and contestation. Being attentive to how material conditions of globalization produce culturally specific diasporic subjects, Migration Matters engages with the idea of transnationality as a diasporic condition but without ignoring the national, racial, class, and gender differences. Addressing the contemporary condition of transnationality, the book considers how globalization shapes culturally specific diasporic subjects. It examines the persistent connections transnational migrants maintain with their homelands and how identities are configured across multiple nation-states. Spanning texts from 1989 to 2006, Migration Matters maps the shifts in nation and diaspora, particularly post-9/11 world. It is an essential read for scholars and students in South Asian diaspora studies, postcolonial literature, gender and cultural studies, migration, and transnationalism.

  • Financial Accounting: Concepts and Applications

    Author: Sunil K Parameswaran

This book takes a contemporary business school approach to the subject of accounting. Non-commerce students, in particular, have found this framework to be helpful as they engage with the subject. It begins by introducing assets, liabilities, and the concept of a balancesheet. This foundation then helps explain debits and credits, and how to prepare a trial balance. It also covers key applied concepts such as ratio analysis and cash flow statements in a straightforward manner. Feedback from B-School recruiters has indicated that, in practice, these two facets of Accounting are among the most widely used applications from the standpoint of business graduates entering the job market. Both ratio analysis and cash flow statement preparation are applications of accounting-related information. The role of various stakeholders in a business is examined, illustrating how they process accounting information to generate value-added information. A lively, conversational style is used, with an emphasis on practical learning rather than theory. Mini-caselets are woven throughout to make the concepts easy to grasp. Accounting information is widely used by finance managers, and key areas such as cost-volume-profit analysis, annual budgeting, and issues pertaining to working capital management are examined. This book will serve as a reliable resource for students learning accounting at the undergraduate or graduate level. It will also benefit executive education participants who need a sound foundation in accounting and finance.

  • Bastar, 1862

Editors: Uma Ram and K S Ram

In the summers of 1861 and 1862, Captain CLR Glasfurd, a British India bureaucrat, toured Bastar on horseback. His Report on the Dependency of Bastar, originally an official tour document, offers a glimpse into the Gond-inhabited region of Dandakaranya, north of the Godavari River, mentioned in the Ramayana. Glasfurd’s account sheds light on the early days of British India, the empire’s expansion into India’s hinterlands, and the complexities of imperialism. It also explores the rise of commerce-centric ‘development,’ presenting both its positive and negative aspects.
A century later, in the same land Glasfurd once surveyed, a very different story unfolded.
I, Pravir, the Adivasi God is the personal account of Pravir Chandra Bhanjdeo Kakatiya, the last Maharajah of Bastar, deeply revered by his people and remembered across India for his tragic end at the handsof the State in 1966. Crowned at the age of seven after the sudden death of his mother, Pravir was raised under the care of English governesses and, as a teenager, signed the Deed of Accession merging the State of Bastar into the Indian Union. Initially idealistic, he soon found himself alienated in the new republic, his idealism shattered by betrayal. Officially declared insane, though later proven sane, Pravir was stripped of his title, impoverished, and assassinated in 1966, before he turned forty. This is his story, in his own words.
