Dharmasthala: Mantra of Development
Author: Nagesh Prabhu
This book is an in-depth examination of the transformation of Dharmasthala under the leadership of D Veerendra Heggade, Padma Vibhushan awardee. It depicts the centuries-old tradition of Dharmasthala and its significance as an abode of faith wedded to charity without any barriers. It focuses on Heggade’s leadership and ideas since his elevation as the Dharmadhikari in 1968, underscoring his belief that true empowerment involves addressing physical, mental and spiritual needs of individuals rather than simply providing material support. The book dwells on Heggade’s vision and strategies to transform the pilgrimage centre into a hub for social service and the factors behind its widespread influence and reach in India and abroad. It brings out the various facets of the institutions headed by him and seeks to understand what makes them special and effective in its mission. It is an attempt to understand whether it is the enlightened leadership, personal involvement, inclusive approach, compassion or a combination of all these factors that has contributed to the evolution of the developmental model of Dharmasthala, which is portrayed as a ‘mini state’ within Karnataka.

Boatman! – Take these songs from me
Authors: Gabriel Rosenstock, Masood Hussain
Boatman! take these songs from me is a compilation of mesmerizing artwork coupled with tankas. A tanka is an ancient Japanese form of poetry written in short five-line verses, with a total of 31 syllables. The painted reliefs are an aesthetic creation by Masood Hussain, who bases his artwork in this book on Mirza Ghalib’s couplets on the inevitability of grief. These works explore human suffering, the melancholy of life, and the visceral struggle against oppression..
These themes are contextualized in the poems, written by Gabriel Rosenstock, which speak of love, sacrifice, longing, and freedom. His poems also comprise an interesting orthographical inversion of the capital Y in ‘You’ and the lower case ‘i’, which subjectifies the reading experience through an outward focal lens, reflected in the play of light and hue in the paintings. The bilingual poems in Irish and English capture the essence of the paintings, ferrying the collection across to the reader. This poetically painted coffee table book is a ‘Boatman’ unto itself.Interested readers may write to us at mup@manipal.edu about purchasing the book.

Reimagining Border in
Cross-border EducationUniversities are inherently and definitionally universal in their quest for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. They are set to defy borders that exist in parochial forms. Globalization which opened up borders has by design or default created inequalities and imbalances in knowledge systems. Undoubtedly, knowledge is power but the difference in the power that is intrinsic to it and the power that is ascribed which is determined by dominant political and economic hierarchies.

If knowledge predominantly flows from global north to global south, people seeking knowledge move from global south to global north. These imbalances are also seen within these regions, between cultures and communities, one claiming superiority over the other. These realities call for a reassessment of not only what constitutes knowledge, but also what encompasses the idea of borders. Through this book, we wish to see more elaboration on the inclusive role of education that can act as an equalizer or as a catalyst for creating a level playing field across borders.

Life and Art of K K Hebbar
K K Hebbar was a trailblazer in Indian art. His contributions to modern Indian art as an artist, teacher, and art administrator are unparalleled. What is ?Indian? in modern Indian art has been a subject of discussion since the beginning of the modernist movement. Hebbar’s oeuvre is an answer to that question. It is modern and yet, intensely Indian, both in terms of subjects and treatment. Hebbar remained rooted in his native soil. His line drawings are a treasure of Indian art. No one has surpassed them in their delicacy and lyricism.
This biography is Mr Bhat’s affectionate account of his friend Hebbar’s life and art. The strength of Hebbar’s character comes through in his narration. Integrity and self-discipline were Hebbar’s defining qualities. Arguably, the man was greater than his work. And that makes his story intriguing. This biography of a major artist is a welcome addition to the meagre literature on Indian artists.
