  • Boatman! – Take these songs from me

    Authors:

Boatman! take these songs from me is a compilation of mesmerizing artwork coupled with tankas. A tanka is an ancient Japanese form of poetry written in short five-line verses, with a total of 31 syllables. The painted reliefs are an aesthetic creation by Masood Hussain, who bases his artwork in this book on Mirza Ghalib’s couplets on the inevitability of grief. These works explore human suffering, the melancholy of life, and the visceral struggle against oppression..
These themes are contextualized in the poems, written by Gabriel Rosenstock, which speak of love, sacrifice, longing, and freedom. His poems also comprise an interesting orthographical inversion of the capital Y in ‘You’ and the lower case ‘i’, which subjectifies the reading experience through an outward focal lens, reflected in the play of light and hue in the paintings. The bilingual poems in Irish and English capture the essence of the paintings, ferrying the collection across to the reader. This poetically painted coffee table book is a ‘Boatman’ unto itself.

  • State Matters- Kannada Sub-Nationalism and State Formation

    Author: Rajendra Chenni

State Matters: Kannada Subnationalism and State Formation analyzes the formation of a linguistic state and the inevitability of the contradictions arising from material and historical conditions. It examines the historical and political context which led to the emergence and acceptance of linguistic or regional identities during the freedom struggle, a struggle which ironically tried to subsume these identities into one master discourse of the nation.

This book, traversing disciplinary boundaries, weaves complex disparate elements into the concept of linguistic subnationality. It underlines how linguistic subnationality is sustained against the push and pull of caste/class hegemony, national party-based politics, and larger forces of development and globalization.

  • Sringara in Subandhu and Nemichandra

Author: Mahaling Bhat, Editor: N Thirumaleshwara Bhat

The Vāsavadattā by Subandhu and the Līlāvati Prabandham by Nēmicandra are two renowned Campū Kāvyas (epic poem) in Kannada, which can be traced back to the early half of 700 BCE. K Mahalinga Bhat published a comprehensive analysis of the epic poems in 1966, situating the original works in their cultural and historical contexts. This book highlights the folk-tale motifs, the characterization and delineation of various Rasas, and analyzes the language of the epics. It also includes excerpts in Sanskrit from both works, accompanied by prose translations.

The original stories are characterized by the element of Śṙṅgāra (Romance). In this book, the aspect of romance in the narratives and the lives of the protagonists is seen through a contemporary lens. It highlights societal conditions and norms prevalent between 700 to 600 BCE in Vāsavadattā and Līlāvati Prabandham in a different light. This new edition compiled by N Thirumaleshwara Bhat draws attention to the relevance of epic poems today and the universality of their narrative.

  • History of Private Banking in South Canara District (1906-69)

    Author: Amol Agrawal

This book explores the unique history of banking in India’s South Canara district. The origin and growth of banking in this region played a significant role in the history of Indian banking, but its contributions remain under-researched. The banks of South Canara are particularly noteworthy as they implemented financially inclusive practices long before they were made mandatory during the nationalization of banks in 1969.

The other sixteen nationalized banks were predominantly from the four metropolitan cities Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras. The banks of South Canara warrant special attention as the prevalence of this establishment came about in a comparatively remote district. The banks also introduced and continued to offer many schemes for the benefit of the people in the region. This book traces the evolution of banks from the South Canara and how they have contributed to the rich local administrative history of the region.

    Author: Pradipta Shyam Chowdhury

The Women in Bapsi Sidhwa’s Novels explores the concept of “solidarity”, through an in-depth reading of the “Parsi-Pakistani-Punjabi” writer’s works. As a writer, Bapsi Sidhwa resists a defined category, which gives her the fluid perspective of an “insider-outsider”. In context of Third World feminism, Pradeepta Shyam Choudhary delineates the writer’s significant position in the discourse, drawing a parallel between her voice and the characters in her stories.

Drawing on the motif of the feminist quest for self-establishment in her writings, this book analyzes the issues raised about lived experiences of women in the Third World in general, and South Asia in particular. It illustrates Bapsi Sidhwa as a reminiscent thinker, highlighting her acute awareness of social conditions.

Bringing to the forefront the diasporic elements of her creative career, this book focuses mainly on four of Bapsi Sidhwa’s novels – WaterThe Pakistani BrideIce-Candy-Man, and An American Brat.
