T R Subba Rao (1920-1984), popularly known as TaRaSu, was one of the most celebrated Kannada novelists of the 20th century. A leading figure in the Pragatisheela movement, he played a key role in shaping modern Kannada literature,
alongside A N Krishna Rao and Basaavaraj Kattimani. Known for his prolific writing, TaRaSu authored over forty novels, short stories, and plays, many of which were adapted into films, including Nagarahavu, Chandavalliya Tota, Chakrateertha, and
Hamsagite.

His deep interest in Chitradurga’s history influenced many of his works. His final novel, Durgastamana, earned him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award. A master of blending fact with creative imagination, TaRaSu’s contributions to Kannada literature continue to resonate, making him a significant literary figure even today

    The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Venkatasubbiah defies Tippu Sultan’s order to perform in his palace. To protect the dignity of his art, he sacrifices his ability to sing by cutting off his tongue. Undeterred, he continues to produce swaras through his nose, earning him the metaphorical title of the swan. His life ends while performing, leaving an unforgettable legacy of self-respect and artistic integrity.
