Gottfried Münzenberg is the pioneer researcher involved in SuperHeavy Elements (SHE) research, from the very beginning. He worked at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung MbH, (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany. He designed Separator for Heavy-Ion Reaction Products (SHIP), the key instrument in SHE research, and was the leader of the SHIP group, which discovered the first three new GSI elements: Bohrium, Hassium and Meitnerium. The co-discoverer of the elements: Darmstadtium, Roentgenium and Copernicium, he was also the leader of the GSI fragment separator research group, where he discovered more than 200 exotic nuclei, including the double magic nuclei, 100Sn and 78Ni. He has also been the leader of the GSI department, Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Chemistry, and a professor at the Mainz University, Germany. He retired in 2005. He is a recipient of many awards, including the Physikpreis of the German Physical Society, the Otto Hahn Preis of the City of Frankfurt and the Lise Meitner Prize of the European Physical Society. He has received honorary doctorate degrees of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Reactions, JINR, Dubna, Russia, and of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Currently, he is a guest researcher at the Manipal Advanced Research Group (MARG), MAHE, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

The book is also educational as it includes basic physics and new developments of SHE research, besides the historical aspects of it.
